Why Supply Chain Model required?

I am new to the SAP APO domain and hence some of you may irritate with this basic question. But was not satisfied with the answers so far received with colleagues/peers.

Why there's only one active (Supply Chain) model at a time in APO?

In fact why do we need Model in first place?

I know that there can be multiple models which can be set-up for creating different planning data records, by which one can investigate all aspects and options surrounding a given supply chain situation, and also to simulate the effects that various different parameters would have on it.

There's a concept of Planning version as well which can be used for the simulation purpose explained above.

So why Model required on top of planning version.  Is planning version not sufficient for simulation and finalization purpose?

Is there any business reason which I am ignorant of?

You seem to have answered your own question pretty well.

R/3 links to only the active 000 model for CIF master data updates, so any others you create are only for simulation purposes.
