You may get umpteen different answers since the answer to your question may vary from person to person. Its more of one's personal experience while learning Java which would motivate an answer.

From what I know, I would strongly recommend this book:
"The Java Programming Language"
Authors: James Gosling, Ken Arnold and David Holmes.
ISBN 81-7808-148-2 (third edition).

I learnt Java from this book, I suspect if there is a better resource for learning Java, from scratch, than this. This is an awesome book. Since you already know C++, it will be smooth sailing. Actually you don't need to know C++ to read from this book, I still dont know C++.

The popular choice is "The Complete Reference Java 2"
Author: Herbert Schildt.
ISBN 0-07-049543-2 (fifth Edition)
From what I've heard, this book has more code examples and is a easy read. Gives  a good picture of the language.

Happy Learning,

Vinay.
