89 represents miscellaneous lots. They are to create lot manually when needed. These lots are non-stock relevant. We create 89 origin lots just to check the quality.
Suppose you have a raw material in stock. You did GR for
that say 1 month back with origin 01. Suddenly you feel you need go for
a check again, without any movement or stock transfer of the material.
As you are aware, other inspection lot creations is mainly associated with
movement of materials, you will find 89 useful here.
When do business utilize this type of inspection type 89?
Business use inspection type 89 when they need a non-stock
relevant check on a material. Actually if you have a well mapped QM process
in place, you should not need it other than an unplanned intermediate check.
But I have seen a shady use of this when recurring inspection is not activated
and inspection is needed for perishable materials, or audit management
component is not in use and 89 is being used as an audit check. So, it’s
upon the business requirement where to use 89 lots.

These are the procedural steps when going to create a new inspection type similar to 89
1) Maintain task list usage - SPRO -> Quality Management -> Quality Planning -> Inspection Planning -> General -> Define task list usages
2) Maintain inspection type - SPRO -> QM -> Quality Inspection -> Inspection Lot Processing -> Inspection Lot Creation -> Maintain inspection types (for e.g. Z89) - Also maintain the task list usage here
3) Maintain Quality inspection lot origins and assign inspection types - SPRO -> QM -> Inspection Lot Processing -> Inspection Lot Creation -> Maintain inspection lot origins and assign inspection types
4) Define default values for inspection type - SPRO ->
QM -> Quality Inspection -> Inspection Lot Processing -> Inspection Lot

Why custom inspection type?
There are several reasons. The primary reasons is that for certain functionality can be assigned at the inspection type level. This includes:
1) Different plan usages - inspection plans have defined usages. An inspection type searches for plans with specific usages. You might want to have different sets of plans for different purposes. An 04 might use plans with usage 05. While a Z04 might use plans with a usage of 03. You might create manual inspection lots with the Z04 and automatic ones with the 04.
2) Copy results functionality is set up by inspection type. In the same plant you might only want to use copy functionality for certain materials, so you set up different inspection type for that.
3) You can set up the default values that are used in the material master for each inspection type. If you have a situation with vastly different settings, having a second inspection type might help in maintenance.
