Communication Types in Communication Strategy

Communication strategies are used to automatically select the preferred communication method for contacting a particular partner.

You can create a communication strategy in Message Control Customizing by selecting Cross-application Components -> General Application Functions -> Message Control.

The sequence is defined by positions.

You can use the following communication types:

  • FAX (fax messages)
  • TLX (Telex)
  • X40 (X.400)
  • LET (Print output, please do not use PRT)
  • INT (Internet mail via SMTP)
  • RML (Internal mail)
Create a NAST output condition record via the MN04 tcode for purchase orders, for example.

In the condition record for your transmission medium 5, select Communication and save your communication strategy from the next screen.

Example

You want to send advertising material to all customers by e-mail if possible. Those customers who do not have an e-mail connection should receive the material by fax. Those customers who have neither an e-mail connection nor a fax connection should receive printed material by mail.

Integration

Save the addresses and communication methods in central address management. Select Tools -> Business Communication -> Office -> Addresses -> External Companies/Contact Person. New communication methods can be created by selecting Additional Communication.

The current user is used as the sender. Make sure that the user has communication data in the relevant communication types (for example, the sender must have an e-mail address to send e-mails).

You can define a communication strategy per output type in Customizing, which the system should propose when creating a condition record.
