Project Types For WBS Elements

What is the importance of Project Type in WBS element?

Project type can be used for restrict authorisation and for summarisation reports (alternative hierarchy) along with dynamic selection in standard PS reports.

Project type is used to group or classify projects as required e.g.

  • investment projects
  • capital projects
  • development projects
Project type is used primarily for the reporting purpose. Say if you are  large no of reports and you want a report of the particular type of project at that time it will be helpful to you.

If you take up any standard report of PS, you will find there a dynamic selection button ( SHIFT+ F4), click on WBs master data -> give your project type there -> project / WBS give blind finder -> Execute report.

This is the best use  of the project type, so, it is primarily used for reporting, building alternative summarisation hierarchies and authorisation.

It can also be used for developing customer requirements e.g. use of BADI for WBS settlement rule determination based on project type as a parameter.

If this is not used then there is no impact on PS in any way, however I have yet to carry out a PS implementation where this field was not used

Relation Between WBS Elements and Other Object Types

Try to analyse the following SAP tables. It will help you to know the relationship:

For project definition, please check PROJ

For WBS elements, check table PRPS

For the settlement rule, tables COBRA and COBRB

For the settlement values, refer to the cost tables COSPD and COSSD.

You can run the transaction RKACSHOW. This will lead you to all the cost tables for a particular object.

WBS Elements Configuration

What are the relevant WBS Elements to configure?

Create Project Types for WBS Elements

IMG -> Project System -> Structures -> Operative Structures -> Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) -> Create Project Types for WBS Elements

The project type does not influence program control or screen selection. You can use the project type as a filtering criterion in the information system.

Specify Applicants for WBS Elements

IMG -> Project System -> Structures -> Operative Structures -> Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) -> Specify Applicants for WBS elements

You can define here Applicants for WBS elements

Specify Persons Responsible for WBS Elements

IMG -> Project System -> Structures -> Operative Structures -> Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) -> Specify Persons Responsible for WBS Elements

You can define here persons responsible for WBS elements.

Define Priorities for WBS Elements

IMG -> Project System -> Structures -> Operative Structures -> Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) -> Define Priorities for WBS Elements

You can define here priorities for WBS elements. There are already some standard priorities defined in SAP. We will work with them and not configure new ones.

Define Field Selection: Work Breakdown Structures

Create User-Defined Fields for WBS Elements

Maintain Substitutions

IMG -> Project System -> Structures -> Operative Structures -> Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) -> Maintain Substitutions

You can use substitutions to replace values and value combinations in the Project System. In addition you can define several interdependent substitution statements for future use.
